what local government is doing to help and to prepare for the coming rain & flood season. Our annual ‘Flooding in Whatcom County’ newsletter has been updated and is now online with this information. It will be arriving soon in mailboxes around the county. It provides information on what to do before, during, and after a flood to owners of property located in flood-prone areas in unincorporated Whatcom County. Learn more about emergency notifications, evacuation procedures, and various preparedness measures for you and your family.

This year, we’ve included a special insert in the newsletter that shares updates on the actions taken by Whatcom County government since the November 2021 floods to help our community recover and prepare for future flooding. Find information on flood recovery assistance provided to date, infrastructure repairs, international coordination, and the hazard mitigation grant program.

Whatcom County Public Works will be providing more updates on our River and Flood Division’s work and sharing more information on how to prepare for floods this fall. Educating the community about flood preparedness is part of our participation in the National Flood Insurance Program, which reduces flood insurance rates by 20% in our community.
