Tuition for in-state students at Western Washington University increased by 3% for the 2022-23 school year, as revealed in the most recent disclosure, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Washington residents paid $8,967 to attend the public four-year university this year, which is $264 higher than the $8,703 charged during the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students faced tuition fees that were 199.7% higher than those for in-state students in the 2022-23 school year, amounting to $26,873. This represents a 3.6% increase from the $25,930 charged in 2021-22.

Approximately 83% of the undergraduate student body at Western Washington University are residents of Washington state, while about 17% come from other states.

Financial aid data indicates that 95% of full-time undergraduates who enrolled in the 2022-23 academic year received some form of student financial assistance. A total of 2,909 students were awarded grants or scholarships totaling $20.5 million, and 1,040 students borrowed over $7.5 million in student loans.

Across the entire undergraduate population, 8,143 students benefited from grants or scholarships amounting to $73.4 million. Additionally, 3,886 students took out federal student loans totaling $23.1 million.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
