The city of Bellingham and Whatcom County have put together a four-part listening series on race and justice that began earlier this week, according to a county press release.
The first part of the series was held on July 28. The rest of the series will be held on Aug. 10, 15 and 18.
The city and county hope community members will use the series as a way to share experiences and ideas on how to make changes, the news release states.
"We intend this to be the beginning step in a continuum that includes joining communities nationwide in doing the hard work of identifying how we dismantle structural racism in our organizations and our community," Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood said in the press release.
Fleetwood said he hoped the series would help provide opportunities for community members to share their thoughts while still adhering to COVID-19 restrictions.
"We intend this listening series to be the first step in a process of understanding our community's experiences with racism and injustice and taking steps to effectively address these issues," Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu said in the press release. "It is the beginning of a dialogue that will result in necessary changes."
