Anyone is capable of thinking of changing the lives of others for the better, but turning the idea into a reality is a whole different story.

Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a sense of volunteerism, SCORE seeks to help prospective businesses owners put their plans into motion, Whatcom Talk reported.

The organization, which has more than 300 offices nationwide including its Bellingham location, has been responsible for the start of more than 32,000 new businesses two years ago.

Graham Burke, a retiree who once headed a group of telecommunications companies, serves as a mentor for Bellingham SCORE, which has been open since 1992. Formerly of Washington, D.C., he wanted to make a difference in his new home.

“A lot of people have a good idea, but the question is—and I confronted this problem all the time in businesses I ran—how to take that idea and implement it,” Burke told Whatcom Talk. “There are a lot of people out there that have ideas, and then there’s another group that are implementers. You’ve got to combine the two. It takes a lot of discipline to take that idea from the penthouse down to the ground floor.”
