State Sen. Doug Ericksen is working on legislation that will require voters to present ID to vote at polls.
Washington state used to require voters to show ID, but currently has no requirement for it, Bellingham Herald reported. Ericksen is trying to bring the law back for in-person voting at poll stations and invalidate absentee ballots.
Without proving a citizen is a voter, there are "longstanding concerns," he said on security for elections.
“Nothing is more secure than the neighborhood voting booth, with poll workers checking to make sure every voter is entitled to cast a ballot,” Ericksen said in a statement Tuesday, Nov. 10, Bellingham Herald reported. “Washington has gotten off lucky for a decade. But the disarray in other states this year ought to teach us that we are vulnerable, too.”
Currently, his legislation would allow for absentee ballots to still be requested; in-person voting would be an option before election day and election day would be a holiday.
